Rustic site overlooking Mam Tor, with the best walking in the peak district

Rowter Farm is a rustic working farm set in a great location in the shadow of Mam Tor. It’s located at the head of the Hope Valley, some 230 metres above sea level, and just above the spectacularly steep-sided Winnats Pass - very handy for hikers wanting to climb Mam Tor.
The site is flat and nicely grassed, with good views of Mam Tor and Rushup Edge. If the weather is fine you can watch paragliders swoop from these tops. Blue John cavern and other famous caves are all with a mile or two. There are plenty of great walking routes from the site along with easy access for mountain biking if that's your thing.

Rowster Farm is a simple, no frills site consisting of two large fields with no lighting and no electric hook-up. It’s exposed to the elements although there is some protection from perimeter walls. Facilities include toilets, showers and a wash area for clothes and pots. There’s a little farm shop with basics food supplies including tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Cooking stoves are allowed, provided they are off the ground. There are plenty of pubs and shops in Castleton which is a 30 min walk - but it’s very steep so you might want to drive!

Location

GPS: 53.3343°N, 1.807°W

From the North: Follow the A6 through Chapel-en-le-Frith, at the small roundabout, take the left to A623, you reach a 90 degree angle in the road at a Pub called the Wanted Inn. Turn left onto the A6187 and continue up the road behind the pub. Follow the road for a few miles, the entrance to the campsite is on the right a few yards before a fork in the road (Winnats Pass and Castleton). The entrance is a discrete metal gate. Beside the gate there is a green sign post/pole (unfortunately with the sign missing), this leads to a thin single-lane road and the farm is about 500m up on the left. The gate is opposite a wooden 'public footpath' sign directing walkers to Mam Tor.
