In recent years, Caffyns was an accredited Camping and Caravanning Club site until the then owners decided to end this side of their business. Now we own Caffyns, we are committed to re-establishing the site and going much further in providing new camping facilities and attractions and moving forward with Exmoor National Park to this end. We are licensed by North Devon Council and are open from March 1st to October 31st. Although Caffyns is set high up overlooking the Valley of the Rocks and the coast, it is relatively sheltered from the prevailing south-westerlies. We're not saying you will not get any wind up here, but all our camping fields have mature, high hedgerow boundaries which offer both privacy and a certain degree of weather-proofing! What is without doubt are the breathtaking views and space here. The wildlife is also quite something; you can regularly wake up to red deer on the hillsides and down in the combe by the stream, herons in the fields and buzzards riding thermals overhead. The sheer 160 acre size of Caffyns means we can offer several areas within the property for camping, from secluded and very sheltered to out in the open with huge panoramic views to sea and over the Valley of the Rocks. As you can see from the pictures opposite, our fields are very spacious and almost completely flat, something everyone has commented on. The fields are also inter-linked by proper tracks so vehicle access is easy. We have five main fields, three of which are ideal for family camping as they are close to all facilities, well sheltered, and completely enclosed, giving children ample space to play, but allowing parents to keep an eye on them! And while on one hand, we can accommodate very large groups with absolutely no impact on other campers, if you like secluded camping, we have ample space for that too! We have also just sub-divided two of the main fields with grassed banks to provide more intimate camping areas. We can also take large tents with no problems at all. If you thought Doone Valley was beautiful, this is even better! We have excellent facilities - our completely, newly refurbished facilities block is now open, providing ample free hot showers, modern gents and ladies toilets, sinks, disabled toilet, family changing room and shower, laundry, fridge/freezer, microwaves, and washing up facilities - and we have a good range of everday camping supplies in our new on-site shop. There are water standpipes in the fields.

Approaching from the East (M5 or A303/358): Route 1 Quickest route for cars (NOT SUITABLE for trailers) This takes the A358 north west from Taunton (signposted Minehead). There are two ways to get onto this road; either go via junction 25 on the M5 and go through Taunton (this can be very busy at Bank Holidays and weekends, but easier at other times), or go off at junction 26 and come back up the A38 and A3605 to join the A358 at Staplegrove if you wish to avoid Taunton. Once on the A358, turn left at Cedar Falls just past Bishops Lydeard and take the B3224 to Wheddon Cross and Exford. From here, the B3223 takes you to Barbrook via Simonsbath and the steep hairpin at Hillsford Bridge. Once past Barbrook, follow the A39 (signposted to Barnstaple) for a mile until you come to Caffyns Cross fingerpost. Turn right here, continue straight on for half a mile (ignore the first turning on the right) and you will come to our private drive on the right. This is a wonderful drive as it takes you through the heart of the Exmoor National Park, over cattle grids, through pony and sheep-dotted moorland. This whole journey can take as little as 45 minutes, and even in busy times there is very little traffic and the road quality is far better than many A roads! Route 2 Scenic route (again cars only!) Come off the M5 at Junction 27 and come on the A361 onto the Tiverton by-pass. Then turn up the A396 and follow this up the beautiful Exe valley, turning off onto the B3222 to Exbridge and then Dulverton (a lovely place but with very very narrow roads into and out of it). From here the B3223 takes you to Simonsbath and on to us as above. Route 3. Trailer route You can leave at Junctions 23 or 24 and come onto the A39 via Bridgewater, Minehead, Porlock (either up the hill or via the less steep toll road) and Lynmouth. From here, the A39 climbs to Barbrook; this road is a little narrow in places, but coming this way avoids the steep hairpin bends at Hillsford Bridge. From Barbrook the A39 takes you to Caffyns Cross in afew minutes; directions from there, as above. It would normally take you an hour and a quarter to get to the Caffyns via this route. It is a straightforward drive, but it can easily get clogged up in Bridgewater, and the A39 can be very slow, so the drive can take alittle longer. With this in mind, trailer owners might also like to consider coming via Simonsbath as in routes 1 and 2 above, but taking the B3358 from Simonsbath to Blackmoor Gate, and coming down to Caffyns that way. Approaching from the South-West: The best approach is via Barnstaple, but be warned...its ring road isn't really one! It can take quite some time to get around all its islands, especially at peak holiday times. The town is prone to seize up with anything slightly more than normal traffic. The A39 Lynton road takes you straight to Blackmoor Gate and from there past Parracombe and Martinhoe Cross. When you reach Caffyns Cross, turn left (if you reach Barbrook, you've missed it!) and continue straight on for half a mile (ignore the first turning on the right) and you will come to our private drive on the right.
