Manor Court Farm is a working arable and sheep farm, which has been in the Matthews family since 1955. It covers 350 acres, with cornfields, pastures and woodlands stretching to the banks of the River Medway, which here forms the boundary between Kent and Sussex. There is a flock of around 500 sheep. We used to have a large dairy herd, and 300 pigs, as well as growing a large acreage of potatoes. Now the farm is 'share-farmed' with a neighbouring farmer, and some of the redundant farm buildings are rented out as business units. Manor Court Farm has ancient, semi-natural woodlands, ponds, historic landscape features and medieval ironstone quarries. Wildlife on the farm includes kestrel, buzzards, owls (Barn and Little), kingfishers, skylark, foxes, fallow and roe deer, badgers and rabbits, and there is a wide range of plant species such as wild garlic, bluebells, primroses, wood anemones, and celandine. The farm is on the edge of the village of Ashurst, which has a church dating back to medieval times, a new village hall built in 2000, which is available for hire, and a station on the Uckfield to London Bridge line. There is also a sports ground with pavilion where football and stoolball is played. Stoolball is an old Kentish game originally played using milking stools. The village no longer has a school, shop or pub, but Fordcombe, Langton Green and Groombridge villages are all about a mile away and can be reached by car or on foot. There are three pubs within easy walking distance. The farm is located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the main A264 road five miles west of Tunbridge Wells and about eight miles from East Grinstead. Gatwick airport is 40 minutes away by car, and there are regular train services from Ashurst, and the nearby towns of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge. The train journey to London takes about 45 - 55 minutes. The Channel Tunnel is approximately an hour away by car. The farm is ideally located for those wanting a relaxing holiday, a short break in Kent or a base for exploring the South East of England.
