Waveney River Centre

Suffolk, Burgh St Peter

More Photos

We are an award-winning family-owned Park backed up up by a small, friendly team of enthuiastic staff.Burgh St Peter staithe and Waveney River Centre have a rich history; nowhere has a church tower quite like the ziggurat inspired church of St Mary, whilst in the Victorian era The Waveney Inn featured a zoological gardens in its grounds - youХll find old photographs of some of the animals in the pub's main bar. But throughout the years Burgh St Peter was most important for its staithe, where trading wherries would load and unload goods, and for the ferry which allowed south NorfolkХs residents to walk or cycle to Lowestoft fish market. The expansion of the Broads holiday industry in the 1960s led to the first phase of Waveney River Centre's development as a visitor destination, and by the 1980s the business included a much expanded pub, additional marina and an indoor heated pool. Today, this award winning holiday park and marina is open year round and features luxury holiday lodges, 5-star camping and boat hire, as well as a ferry link to Carlton Marshes.

Visiting by car Follow the A143 to Haddiscoe and turn at the village hall into Wiggs Road, signposted Waveney River Centre (left when travelling from the east and right when travelling from the west). Continue to follow the brown signs, turning left into Burgh Road after 2 miles and proceed for another 2.5 miles until you arrive at the Centre. Please note that the route is narrow and passes through a small village so please drive carefully having regard for our neighbours. If your Tom Tom tells you to go a different way, please ignore it and follow the brown signs instead. The route usually suggested by satellite navigation systems features a number of blind bends and is completely unsuitable for holiday traffic. Furthermore it will direct you to a field, which is very nice but not where you want to be. The signposted route has some passing bays and generally has the edge as you can see more than 50 yards ahead.Closest bus services The nearest bus stop is 2 miles from the park at Wheatacre. Anglian Buses run regular services via Wheatacre to: Beccles & Great Yarmouth (service 581)Closest rail services The nearest railway stations are at: Beccles (Ipswich-Lowestoft line). 7 miles by road. Haddiscoe (Norwich-Lowestoft line). 6 miles by road. Oulton Broad South (Ipswich-Lowestoft line). 2 mile walk plus short ferry trip. Oulton Broad North (Norwich-Lowestoft line). 2.5 mile walk plus short ferry trip.Note - if travelling via Oulton Broad and the ferry, part of the walk is along the edge of a field. This is a public footpath but it can become muddy in very wet conditions. Please wear appropriate footwear and allow 50 minutes+ for the walk. Please contact the ferryman en-route on 07500-571232 so that we can anticipate your arrival.Waveney River Centre is easily accessible from the sea, via Lowestoft harbour and Mutford Lock. Lowestoft Harbour Lowestoft Harbour is open at all states of tide. All bridges between Lowestoft and Oulton Broad will open so there are no problems for yachts with taller masts. Small craft passing under the bridge have a clearance at mean high water springs of 2.2m at the centre of the arch. This road bridge will not open during rush hours and prior arrangement is required with Lowestoft Harbour Control on Channel 14 VHF. There is a Waiting Pontoon in the Trawl Dock. Pleasure craft may be required to form ФflotillasХ to pass under the bridge to lessen disruption to the townХs traffic. Bridge-openings may take place at 10 specified times. Navigation in the bridge channel is controlled on Channel 14 and by amber and green lights on the bridge. General port details are available from plans D and E on Admiralty chart 1535 and on Lowestoft Haven Marina's website. Mutford Lock The maximum size of craft that can be accommodated is length 22m (70ft), beam 6.5m (20ft 8in) and draught 1.75m at Low Water. Tide at Oulton Broad is approximately three hours after Lowestoft with a mean range of 0.7m. The charge is currently Ј11.00 per vessel for each lock transit or day return. The lock keepers work on VHF channel 73 and monitor VHF channel 14 or can be contacted Tel: 01502 531778 (if unavailable, contact the Harbour Master at Oulton Broad Tel: 01502 574946). They may arrange to open Carlton railway swing bridge and Mutford road bridge, if required, but bridges will not be opened during periods of rush hour traffic, and 24 hours notice is appreciated. The lock is normally operated from 08.00 to 18.00 apart from peak hours (08.00-09.00), 12.00-13.00, 17.00-18.00) but, at weekends and bank holidays only, requirements after 18.00 must be booked prior to 16.00 on that day. Before visiting the Broads, please check the Notice to Mariners section of the Broads Authority website for the latest navigational information.
