Venice Carnival 2022

Carnival in Venice with costumes and gondolas

The long-awaited Carnival of Venice is back this year, from 19 February to 2 March 2022! The good news was confirmed by the mayor of Venice himself at the end of January. The city will also hold its ‘pre-carnival’ from 12 to 18 February 2022.

The Venice carnival is a traditional Italian festival. In fact, this one goes back to the Middle Ages. The carnival begins ten days before Ash Wednesday and it lasts until Shrove Tuesday. Famous for its costumes and masks, it attracts huge crowds each year, who await the event with excitement.

On average, before the pandemic, the festival attracted more than 500,000 people over its 10 days.

What is so magical about the Venice Carnival?

Most of the costumes you’ll see there have been made for the occasion. About 95% of the participants make their costumes themselves! That’s the real authenticity and magic of this event!

What is the Venice “Pre-carnival”?

This is a series of events and parties that precede the Venice Carnival. This series of events consists of gala dinners, candlelit dinners, dances, concerts, treasure hunts and more. But most importantly, workshops to make your own carnival mask!

You can enjoy these workshops and events on :

Saturday 12 February
Sunday 13 February
Friday 18 February

What the Venice Carnival 2022 programme of eventss?

Venice Carnival 2018 by Lolive67

This year will be a little different. The major difference is that the “flight of the angel” from St. Mark’s Campanile and the Most Beautiful Costume parade and competition which usually take place in St. Mark’s Square will unfortunately not be on the programme (due to the current health situation).

However, St. Mark’s Square will be accessible and you can still go there to admire the participants in their beautiful costumes and take pictures.

You can also attend smaller events: concerts, dinners, operas and workshops. The programme accessed using the link above gives all the details related to these different events.

Finally, parties and events in the palaces of Venice are also allowed this year. However, you have to present your ‘Covid Pass’ to access them. Negative tests are no longer accepted to enter restaurants, hotels, museums, discos, cinemas and concert halls – only full vaccination is acceptable. Wearing a FFP2 mask is also mandatory.

Enjoy the Italian countryside as well as the carnival

A campsite is the ideal base for your stay near Venice! It is a really good option to both enjoy the festivities and excitement of the carnival, yet at the same time have a quiet place to retreat to – to rest and regain your energies! We have two great options for you:

Camping Village Cavallino

Your first option is the 4 star Camping Village Cavallino by Villatent ⭐. Staying here will also allow you to enjoy the Adriatic coast, since this campsite is located by the sea. At 4 kms from the campsite you will find a small port, from where you can reach the heart of Venice by boat in just 20 minutes.

This campsite has a whole host of little extras to add to your holiday: a swimming pool, a restaurant, a pizzeria, shops and a grocery shop, but also entertainment. What a novelty to stay in one of their luxurious safari tents, with all the comforts of a chalet! They even have wifi, kitchen and bathroom in them.

Camping Rialto

Your second option is the Rialto campsite. Its huge advantage? It is only 10 minutes by bus from the city of Venice! The local public bus stops in front of the campsite entrance, every 15 minutes until very late at night. The price of a round trip ticket is only €3 per person.

In terms of accommodation, you can choose between glamping (canvas mobile home), mini chalets, chalets and mobile homes. You can also enjoy a restaurant, bar and pizzeria at the campsite. Wifi is also available.

There is an outdoor swimming pool, but this is only open from June to September.

If you need to rent a car to get from the airport to the campsite and to visit some of the other fantastic places in the Veneto region, you can compare and book car rental services here!

Yes, you are required to present your ‘Vaccine/Covid Pass’ to access all events that form part of the carnival. The same applies to access to restaurants, hotels, museums, discos, cinemas and concert halls. It is also compulsory to wear a FFP2 mask.

How do I travel to Venice for the carnival?

You can get there by plane. Marco Polo Airport is the main airport for Venice, but you can also fly into Treviso Airport, located one hour north of Venice. This is the airport most used by low-cost airlines. From another Italian city, you can easily take the train to Santa Lucia Station in Venice. Visit the Ferrovie dello Stato website.
If you are coming by car, we recommend that you park your car outside the city. Your campsite is a good solution for parking – then bus or boat into the centre of town.
