The Rhône-Alpes (now part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region) is a land of contrasts: big cities (notably Lyon and its four UNESCO districts), magnificent rivers winding through colourful countryside, and high mountains that are a skier's delight... And camping is an excellent way to discover the region, which offers many different kinds of campsites.
The Alpine departments - Isère, Savoie, Haute-Savoie - are full of campsites to enjoy the fresh air, mountain lakes and fantastic views of the region. Ain and its capital Bourg-en-Bresse is a great place for history-lovers, with monuments and sites such as Bibracte, the largest archaeological site in France, nestled on Mount Beuvray. Meanwhile Ardèche is has loads of open-air delights to discover during your camping holiday. These include caves like the Orgnac cave, medieval villages like Balazuc, Saint-Montan and Joyeuse and the magnificent Ardèche gorge for swimming, kayaking, hiking, and simply enjoying in breath-taking views. Neighbouring Drôme is not lacking in attractions (and campsites) either, with its picturesque Vercors villages and its Provençal side populated by brightly coloured lavender fields.
All of this together is what makes Rhône-Alpes a firm favourite for campers.
